ABSTRACT

Unemployment has become a chronic problem in Nigeria and it is classified as one of the most severe multipliers of poverty which restricts a high quality of life. This study therefore, attempted to discern where the problem lies. It displayed the issues and challenges faced by theatre arts graduates in the process of searching for jobs (ie in the labour market) and also see if these graduates are the employable by checking their training methods, to know if these students have been properly trained, as well as proffer ways to make the labour market a lot more favorable for graduates and vice versa. A survey was conducted amongst the four hundred level students of Theatre Arts and from the views sampled, it was gathered amongst others things that the major challenges they face is the issue of lack of professionalism and skills set, like good communication skills (fluency). Another prevalent view was the issue of lack of jobs as a result of the poor economic state of the country. Against this backdrop, the study recommends that universities should provide more practical courses for theatre Arts students before graduation, as this would help them to be more professional especially when being tested in the outside world.
