THE WESTERN CULTURE AND THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

ABSTRACT

The study looks at The western culture and the Nigerian music Industry. The objectives of the study are to determine the level of involvement of  the western culture in the Nigerian music industry, to discover the degree of westernization visibility in the Nigerian music industry, to determine the level at which the Nigerian music industry have adapted to the western culture in the 21st century, to determine the quality of output of Nigerian music since the involvement of the western culture in the Nigerian music industry, and to ascertain if there is every hope of recovering the identity or independence of the Nigerian music industry. The study used the survey method of research with questionnaire as a tool to elicit response from the respondents with a sample size of 100 respondents (See table 1). It was found out that Nigerians are familiar with the western culture and they do listen to Nigerian music (See table 7-11). From their observation, it is clear that the Nigerian music Industry in the 21st century has included westernization in the fashion, musical outputs and ideology (see table 12, 13, and 14). The researcher recommended that  In order to effective usher the Nigerian music Industry into maintaining its cultural originality and including root oriented materials,  ideas and languages in their musical contents, the Nigerian music Industry and labels have to ensure that all their artistes are Culturally driven and are singers who appreciate the genres concerned with Nigeria, the Mass Media foreign contents should be reduced and more of Nigerian contents should be broadcasted and aired as the large mass audience tend to cultivate the things they see and hear on television and radio respectively and if foreign contents are aired more than Nigerian, there will be more Nigerian musicians who seem as though they are from another country, record labes and industries in Nigeria should utilize Nigerian made musical instruments so give the music output a cultural sound. This will promote the identity of Nigeria in the 21st century Nigerian music Industry, the Nigerian Government should endorse the record labes that are more cultural driven than those who are foreign driven as this will mobilise record labes to become more Nigerian than foreign, the Nigerian music Industry should promote the Nigerian music with more of Nigeria's identity, even outside the boaders of Nigeria. This will make the identity of Nigeria to be more independent and recognized among other parts of the world,  record labels should encourage their artistes to maintain their cultural identity and integrity whenever they have the opportunity to collaborate with foreign artistes.  The reacher also recommended that NBC should regulate mild restrictions on the broadcasting or airing of Nigerian music that seems to promote the western culture, and should prioritise the airing and broadcasting of music that promotes the Nigerian culture
