ABSTRACT
This long essay examined the utilization of ICTs for research purpose among academicians in higher institutions. It became necessary to embark on this study because of the rapid growth and development of ICTs which have positively affected every sector of the society, including education. The paper employed the primary and secondary method of data collection to ascertain that majority of the lecturers and other academicians utilize ICTs for research. They utilize ICTs such as mobile phones, laptops, computers and the Internet as research instruments. It was also discovered that lecturers encounter several challenges in their utilization of ICTs, which includes, unavailability of ICTs, power failure, network failure and the inability to handle some ICT gadgets. However, these challenges do not totally stop them from utilizing ICTs for research purposes among other things. Therefore, it was concluded that ICTs/new media are veritable research tool that cannot be ignored in this 21st century as far as learning and knowledge development is concerned. It was thereby recommended that tertiary institution should organize workshops that will enable lecturers enhance their skills in handling ICT gadgets for research purpose.
