ABSTRACT
This study was designed to assess the use of visual aids in teaching Ecology to Senior Secondary Biology students in Egor local government area. Four research questions were raised to guild the study.
The method adopted by the researcher is the descriptive survey research design. A total of one hundred (100) randomly selected secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area constituted the study sample. Questionnaire and checklist were used for the study. The reliability of the instruments were established at 0.73 and 0.75 using Cronbach Alpha method. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and mean.
The findings of the study revealed that; Biology teachers use instructional materials in the teaching of Biology such as; pictures and chart, live plants specimen live animals specimen, models materials and laboratory apparatus. Some visual aid such as chalk/marker board, pictures, chart, diagrams, posters and live objects such as animals, plants and animal parts such bones and skeletons, specimens, models are available. Electronic (computer, television and projector) are not available in public Senior Secondary Schools. Helping leaners to develop quick interest, and making the teaching easier and improve learning are the benefit students derived from the use of visual aid. Unstable power supply, possession of the required skill by teacher and student in handling of instructional materials hinders and inadequate fund to repair faulty instructional materials are the challenges encountered in the use of visual aids. It was recommended that; Biology teachers should be resourceful and innovative in the use of learning resources. Where some of the materials are not provided, teacher should improvise to reinforce learning that will consequently improve academic return.
