THE USE OF MULTIMEDIA AIDS FOR EFFECTIVE LEARNING IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN.

ABSTRACT

            This study was carried out to identify the use of Multimedia Aids for effective learning in University of Benin. The research was carried out as a survey research using relevant literature from journals, magazines, books and the internet. Four research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study. A random sampling technique was used in selection of ninety (90) Jupeb students in the University of Benin. The data were collected with questionnaire instrument and analyzed using simple percentage. The result revealed that; most multimedia devices are not used for learning in University of Benin, also, the use of multimedia helps students in explaining abstract concept, help in students’ retention of the subject matter, multimedia when used assist students’ mastery of the subject matter, and Audio and instructional materials aid students understanding and make teaching exciting. And predominate factors that limit the use of multimedia in University of Benin are poor technical and physical infrastructure of learning environment, lack of interest of lecturers in electronic media usage, scarcity of resources on electronic media for obtaining information, and Problems of accessibility to existing hardware (computer, overhead projector etc.). Based on the results, it was recommended that The Nigerian (federal) government should see Multimedia integration effort at the university as an embracing project to development in education and should support by allocating and releasing adequate funds to invest in massive Internet connectivity, as well as purchase and installation of Multimedia infrastructures, if the government is not forthcoming, the university management can solicit for both internal and external funds and support from willing individuals, philanthropists and international organizations, the government can also help by subsiding or reducing the tariffs on importation of Multimedia facilities so that lecturers and others can afford the purchase of these Multimedia facilities and accessories since the price will come down, integrating the use of technology into curriculum in a purposeful and meaningful way is one of the many problems facing lecturers today. Multimedia training should be given to lecturers and other members of staff in the university on integration of Multimedia in instruction.
