ABSTRACT

The research work was carried out to evaluate the subsurface at University of Benin and its environs using Engineering field as a case study area in order to investigate for rocks and minerals. This study was carried out in University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City, the capital of Edo State, Nigeria and is located in the south-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria; bounded by latitudes 6° 06'N, 6° 30'N and longitudes 5° 30' E, 5° 45' E and area of about 500 square kilometers. University of Benin has a human population of over 40,000. For the ERT method, The wenner alpha electrode configuration was deplored throughout in this study and Pasi Earth Resistivity Meter was utilized. Ten profiles were covered; each profile is 200m long, and 50m apart. Five (5) transverse lines were in the North –South direction and the others in the West –East direction. Six iterations were undertaken and this produced an appreciable average RMS of 9.29%. The first step involved using all possible measurement with electrode spacing of 10m. The procedure was followed in 10 traverses where these experiment were undertaken; the distance between adjacent transverse was 50m. The contoured pseudo-section conveyed a qualitative 2D resistivity variation with depth within the subsurface.
