ABSTRACT
The study on the The Use of Language to Express Gender Roles and Identities using Amma Darko’s Faceless as a case study aimed to examine how language is used to depict gender norms in a society. The study explored the ways language is used in the novel to generate gendered power dynamics within the society and how language is employed to express and challenge prevailing gender norms, and depict the struggles and experiences of different characters within the novel. The methodology used for the data collection is the qualitative approach, which involved the extraction of data from the novel. The theoretical framework of this study is the critical discourse analysis as it is a theory that examines the relationship between language, power, and social structures. It examines how discourse is used to legitimize or challenge existing power ideologies and relations. The findings of this analysis across the various interactions reveal the discussions consistently highlighting power dynamics and traditional gender roles, positioning mothers as primary caregivers and fathers as absent or negligent figures. This language choice contributes to the reinforcement of societal expectations and stereotypes related to parenting roles.
