ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to investigate the use of instructional technology in the teaching of vowels sounds in secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study.
The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of this study consists of English Language teachers in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample of 25 English Teachers was taken from the population. Questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents. The data collated were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency count. Validation and reliability of the instrument was carried out.
From the study it was revealed that the use of instructional technology in the teaching of vowels sounds facilitates recall and retention, spur students’ interest in vowels sounds, encourage reinforcement of previous knowledge of vowels sounds, facilitate easy identification of vowels and encourage participation in learning. Also, it was revealed that English language teachers are skilled in the use of instructional technology such as television, computers, the internet, electronic dictionary, radio set, cassette player, video and mobile devices. But most of the English language teachers in Ovia North East Local Government Area in Edo State are not skilled in the use of instructional technology such as smart board, active board, power point and podcast. To this end, the government should make adequate provisions of these relevant instructional aids in secondary schools. This would help to facilitate the teaching of vowel sounds in tremendous ways. English Language teachers should make conscious efforts in learning how to use the instructional technologies that they are not very much skilled in. This would help English teachers create rich learning experience for English language learners.
