ABSTRACT

This study is designed to assess the availability and teachers' use of  instructional materials for teaching English Studies in junior secondary schools.  It This study adopted a descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised all the teachers in public secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State. The sample of the study was thirty teachers. Four research questions were raised. The major findings of this study revealed that teachers are aware of the importance of using instructional materials but most schools lack Instructional materials and facilities for teaching English Studies. As a result of that, most teachers do not use instructional materials in their teaching. This study also showed that there were no significant differences in teachers' use of instructional materials based on gender or experience.

Based on this findings, the following recommendations were made: Edo state government should provide instructional materials for junior secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area, especially ICT facilities; funds should be set aside by the state government to erect and equip language laboratories in schools; English teachers should be encouraged to improvise instructional materials in cases where they are not available; the Parent- Teachers Associations should also make provision for instructional materials; electricity should be provided to enable the use of audio, audiovisuals, computers and projectors while teaching. Also, seminars should be organized to train teachers on how to use ICT facilities, especially projectors.
