THE USE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE TEACHING OF BUSINESS EDUCATION IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN EDO AND DELTA STATE

ABSTRACT

This study determined the use of information and communication technology in teaching business education programme. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population of this study was made up of 45 Business Educators from four public universities in Edo and Delta State. The sample size of this study was 45 business educators from Public Universities in Edo and Delta States. The entire population was used as sample size; hence, census sampling was used.

The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire titled “the use of Information and Communication Technology in the Teaching of Business Education Questionnaire (ICTTBEQ)”.It was however subjected to face validity by the researcher’s supervisor and one other expert in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. The reliability was determined using the internal consistency method which was measured using Cronbach alpha statistic. The instrument was administered 15 business educators from Tai Solarin Universities of Education who were not part of the study population. However, the instrument yielded an alpha value of 0.83. The data collected were analyzed using mean (x), standard deviation (SD), and two sample independent t-test using Statistical Packages for the Social Science (SPSS). The findings generally showed that computer technology influence the teaching of Business Education programme to a high extent, internet influence the teaching of Business Education programme to a high extent, projector influence the teaching of Business Education programme to a high extent, tele-conferencing influence the teaching of Business Education programme to a high extent and there is no significant difference between the perception of male and female students on the use of information and communication technology in teaching business education programme. It was concluded that use of information and communication technology significantly enhance the teaching of business education programme. This simply means that computer, internet, projector and teleconferencing are vital tools for promoting effective and efficient teaching and learning process of business education programme. This will not only help in enhancing business education learning outcome, it will also help in the attainment of business education goals and objectives.
