ABSTRACT

The study focused on the usage of instructional materials for effective teaching and learning of integrated science in junior secondary schools in Ovia North East local government area, Edo state, to make this possible four research questions and purpose of the study were raised to determine the instructional materials which are available for the teaching and learning of integrated science in junior secondary in Ovia North East L.G.A of Edo State, ascertain the extent to which these instructional materials are being utilized in teaching and learning of integrated science in junior secondary schools in Ovia North East L.G.A of Edo State, ascertain the factors affecting utilization of instructional materials in teaching and learning of integrated science and to find out the possible solutions or strategies through which the use of instructional materials in teaching of integrated science can be increased.  

Descriptive survey research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The sample size of the study consists of twenty nine (29) integrated science teachers. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire developed by the researcher and was validated by the researcher’s supervisor. The reliability coefficient was 0.813 was obtained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation method.

Findings from the research the study was to ascertain the instructional materials available for the teaching and learning of integrated science in junior secondary in Ovia North East L.G.A of Edo State, the study discovered that Textbook, Chalkboard, A chart showing respiratory system, a chart showing excretory system a chart showing the circulatory system, a chart showing digestive system, a chart showing the male reproductive system, a chart showing a female reproductive system and a chart showing the structure of the heart are the only available instructional material. The study recommend that the study revealed that most instructional materials needed for the study of integrated science in junior secondary school is not available, therefore the researcher recommend that the Integrated science teachers should endeavour to use and try to improvise instructional materials for effective teaching of Integrated science in the junior secondary schools.
