ABSTRACT
This study examines the issue of the under exploitation of renewable energy in Nigeria, while analysing the efficiency of the various policies and administrative frameworks on energy in Nigeria, in combating the issues of climate change and environmental degradation in Nigeria. The present situation in Nigeria is an over dependence on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, while the bountiful avenue of renewable energy, an alternative energy source is left grossly under exploited. This has led over time to issues of climate change and environmental degradation. This is sadly, the status quo in Nigeria, despite the number of policies and administrative frameworks on energy that has been put in place by the government. These policies includes the National Power Sector Reform Act (NPSRA) 2005, the Renewable Energy Policies Guidelines (REPG) 2006, the Renewable Energy Master Plan (REMP) 2005 and 2012, e.t.c. This study hopes to thoroughly examine these policies and administrative frameworks in order to determine their efficiency so far, in reducing the nation's over dependence on the use of fossil fuel, and the achievement of the goal of a cleaner, more sustainable and modern energy services, through the more efficient utilization of the renewable energy sources, that abound in the country.
