ABSTRACT

The study looks at the topic “Therapeutic effect of music specifically on students, focusing on a case study conducted at the University of Benin..The objectives of this study were to find to examine how music, perform therapeutic functions in the life of students, to examine the most used music genre employed by students to boost their academic task, to also ascertain how social interactions related to music, such as attending concerts and sharing playlists with peers, positively influenced the sense of belonging and general mental well-being of students. The study used the survey research design with questionnaire as an instrument to collect information from the respondents with a sample size of 400 students. The study found out Music, plays several therapeutic function amongst students in the university certain like Uniben Ekehuan campus.  Classical music genre is the most used music genre amongst students, however the students are still open to experimenting other music genre that might aid boost their academic performance.  Social interactions with music-related activities such as attending concerts and sharing playlists with peers, positively influence the sense of belonging and general mental well-being of students. Based on the findings presented, here are some recommendations for leveraging music to enhance the university experience: Incorporate music into academic programs and study environments to optimize its cognitive benefits. For instance, providing access to music during study sessions or integrating music appreciation courses into the curriculum can help students better understand the therapeutic effects of music and how to utilize it effectively for learning. Encourage and facilitate music-related social activities, such as concerts, jam sessions, and music-sharing events. These activities can foster a sense of community among students, promoting social interaction, collaboration, and emotional support, which are essential for overall mental well-being. Establish music therapy programs or provide resources for students to access music therapy services on campus. Music therapy has been shown to have profound effects on mental health, stress reduction, and emotional regulation. By offering such services, universities can support students in managing academic pressures and promoting overall well-being.
