ABSTRACT
This research is based on the investigation of the Industrious and Respectful culture of the Igbo people as enshrined in the Igbo proverb. Its aim is to explore and analyze the core traits of the Igbos through their proverbs. This will go a long way to offer insights to the contributions of Igbo language, their culture, worldview, and way of life. The study will also explain the themes and functions of the Igbo proverbs and how it is seen by the people. The data of the study was sourced and collected from competent Igbo speakers through live observation and from books written by Igbo scholars that contain Igbo proverbs. The qualitative and descriptive research designs were adopted for the analysis. In all twenty (20) proverb in three different themes were presented and analyzed using the systemic functional linguistic approach propounded by Halliday. This is because of the relevance of the theory in giving a concise explanation of the proverb and its functions using the five (5) analytical elements: Field, Tenor, Mode, Meaning, and Function as shown in the data. The theory also allows this study to relate its data to culture and beliefs of Igbo people. It was discovered from the study, that Speaking and context of usage is important for the understanding of Igbo proverbs, and every aspect of the Igbo man is attached to his proverb.
