ABSTRACT

Terminology is a group of specialized words or a body of terms used with a particular technical application and deeply embedded in society. This project work identifies the terminologies associated with kith and Kin in Ilaje, a dialect of Yoruba. The focus is on the terminologies associated with kith and kin in Ilaje culture, shedding light on the significance of familial ties, lineage, and community connections. From terms denoting various family members to those describing the roles and responsibilities within extended kinship networks, the study unravels the language landscape that shapes Ilaje notions of kinship. The aim of the study is to systematically investigate and document the terminologies associated with kith and kin in the Ilaje community. This study employs qualitative research techniques, using qualitative data from the interviews to categorize information and extract meaningful insight. Using frame semantics as the framework, it helps the researcher to focus on the data collected and the in depth analysis. In the course of this research, it was observed that most families in Ilaje are elementary or nuclear in nature. They also recognize two types of kin which are affine and consanguine kin. Through this examination, we gain insight into the cultural values, social structures, and interpersonal dynamics that underpin Ilaje society, illuminating the profound ways in which language reflects and reinforces the bonds of kith and kin among the Ilaje people.
