ABSTRACT

The study has examined the symbolic significance of the island setting in William Golding's Lord of the Flies. The study, therefore has examined the symbols of isolation, civilization and loss of innocence as a means of shaping and reinforcing the novel's central themes. The study also uncovers the use of characterization and the role of natural elements and their psychological roles within the novel.

This study utilizes a qualitative methodology, which involves an in-depth analysis of the primary novel, William Golding's Lord of the Flies, to uncover the symbolic significance of the island in the novel. The study adopts the Freudian psychoanalytic theory, which presents the concepts of id, ego, and superego. This theory is used to examine how the island setting reflects the characters' psychological state, and the inherent conflicts within them.

Therefore, this study has brought out the symbols in William Golding's Lord of the Flies and has portrayed the psychological effects of the symbols of isolation, civilization, and loss of innocence on the characters.
