ABSTRACT

Three soil samples were collected from ekosodin community, Benin city, Edo state. The samples were subjected to several laboratory tests which include; Moisture content determination, Atterberg limit (liquid limit and plastic limit), Particle size analysis, Specific gravity, Compaction test, and California bearing ratio tests. The liquid limit and plasticity index are: 53.87%, 32.59%, 35.13%, 14.81%, and 36.86%, 15.92% respectively. The values of the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content are: 1.60g/cm3 , 1.65g/cm3 , 1.74g/cm3 and 14.2%, 11.4%, 13.4% respectively. Results obtained were compared with the literature and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMWH) requirements, indicating these soils are good for fill and subgrade in road construction. However, I suggest that more research should be conducted to determine their suitability for use in other engineering constructions.
