ABSTRACT
This study found that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is one of the most important legal instruments for combating child labour in Nigeria. The convention outlines the rights that children must have to develop to their full potential. It also provides a vision of the child as an individual as well as a member of a family and community, with rights and responsibilities appropriate to his age and development.
Despite the provisions of other national and international treaties such as the ILO and the Child Right Law of Lagos State, among others, child labour remains a major issue in our society. Because poverty is a major factor in child labour, enforcement and policies alone cannot address the problem. The government has created an enabling climate and provided support for CSOs and NGOs to thrive and has leveraged their work to develop policies, programmes, and interventions for child victims of abuse and violence, but despite this, children continue to be harmed in our society.
