ABSTRACT
This study undertakes a comparative study of the noun phrase structure in Yoruba and English languages, finding out the differences and similarities that exist between them. Data are collected from primary and secondary sources, i.e., published Grammar, linguistics and comparative analysis textbooks, and Internet based material, as well as personal observation. The data are analysed through presenting well-formed and ill-formed expressions, which were compared to find areas of differences and similarities. Noam Chomsky's X-bar theory and Government and Binding Theory provides the theoretical insights upon which the analysis was carried out. Analysis of data showed that there are differences in the NP structure of the English and Yoruba language. We recommend that the post-modifying structure of the Yoruba NP are looked into as some embedding are discovered, and we hope that some further studies would centre on the other group types apart from the noun phrase structure.
