ABSTRACT

It is pertinent to give a quick summary on the Strategic role of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, his economic master plan, the strategically oriented policies and blockade he deployed in quelling the crisis that would have splitted Nigeria in the year 1967-1970 and also how peace and harmony was restored to the various sectors of the Federation in his time. This study started by discussing the life and times of Obafemi Awolowo, how he was determined to educate himself despite the tussles and hurdles in his family. He had no other motivator than his parents especially his mother. Awolowo background, early academic life and political inclination were all thoroughly dealt with. Awolowo had started to rub minds with the Zik of Africa at a tender age, they were opportuned to attend the same college. Furthering his ambition, he bagged a law degree abroad and came back to be a formidable force to reckon with in the Western part of the nation, Amidst the tussles in the Action Group, Awolowo rose to be the Premier of the Western Region, this was only after the sudden assasination of his political rivalry, Chief S.L Akintola, who was brutally murdered alongside Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa in the first coup.
