ABSTRACT
This work present the analysis of the sound system of Ika as a dialect of Igbo language. The aim of this work is to identify, establish and analyse the functional distinctive sounds in the Ika dialect in an attempt to establish his variation similarity to that of Igbo language. In this regard, the focus of the project is a phonological variation study which highlighted sound system as its basis for the phonemic analysis of pointing out the sounds that are potent to cause meaning difference in a similar pairs of words.
The framework adopted was the minimal pair test by trubetzkoy (1939) under generative phonology alongside the step by step procedure outlined by Donwa (1999) using the Ibadan 400 wordlist to elicit data from the informants contacted. The research work was divided into five chapters which explained, analyse and discussed the various sections in the work.
