ABSTRACT
This study explores the sociolinguistic implications of the use of Nigerian Pidgin (NP) among students of the University of Benin, Benin City. Through a mixed-methods approach combining surveys, interviews, and focus groups, we investigate how Nigerian Pidgin is used as a lingua franca among students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Our findings reveal that Nigerian Pidgin serves as a tool for social identity, solidarity, and inclusion, but also perpetuates social exclusion and reinforces existing power dynamics. The study contributes to our understanding of language use in multilingual contexts, highlighting the complex interplay between language, culture, and social relationships. The implications of our findings have significance for language policy, education, and social cohesion in Nigeria. Furthermore,
This study aims to contribute to our understanding of the role of Nigerian Pidgin in the University of Benin community, exploring its frequency of use, influence on language attitudes and identity, and significance in interpersonal communication. The findings will provide valuable insights into the linguistic and social dynamics of the university community, shedding light on the importance of NP as a language of social interaction, identity formation, and community building.
