ABSTRACT
The research work is on the sociolinguistic analysis of Igbo personal name, from a semantic approach. The research examines the social, and cultural ideas which Igbo names communicate, it also shows how the social-cultural background of the Igbo people influence and affects the meaning of their names. Since language is a means through which we communicate culture, the study examines some Igbo personal names, circumstances that influence the naming, and their meaning. This work is of five chapters, chapter one makes an introductory note about the Igbo people, their occupation and religion, factors which motivates personal names, naming procedures in Igbo communities, purpose, scope and significance of study, the sociological, and linguistic concept of Igbo names, Introduction to what personal name is and finally stating the research question used for the analysis of the data available in the research work. Chapter two involves review of related literatures (i.e. previous and recent study of personal names). Chapter three deals with data presentation, which is a presentation of data available to the study of Igbo personal names, chapter four looked at the semantic consideration of Igbo names, with the analysis of these data in chapter three making use of the research questions available in chapter one to analyze it. And finally chapter five which makes a summary, findings, recommendation and conclusion to the study drafting a table of informants who assisted in providing the data used for this research work and texts consulted.
