THE SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACT OF ROAD AND WATER TRANSPORTATION ON IKORODU, LAGOS STATE NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Transportation has a major function to play in the political, economical, psychological, social affairs and development of any country in the world, therefore effective and efficient transport network and infrastructure is needed. The research focuses on the socio-economic impact of road and water transportation on Ikorodu in Lagos State. Four different areas of Ikorodu were taken into consideration they are Agic and Ikorodu garage majorly for road transport while Ogolonto, and Bayeku are majorly for water transport. Questionnaires were utilized in the survey with four hundred administered randomly across the study areas. The data collected was fed into the SPSS version 24. The data were analyzed using, pie chart, bar graph, simple percentages and cross tabulation. The financial impacts of transport on businesses were considered with 24.75% of respondents, reported high impact on their businesses. Adequate transport network had effect on patronage of businesses; Ikorodu garage 32.1% had the highest level of changes in patronage. Level of transport infrastructure was considered, Ogolonto 31.3% had more increased level of infrastructure. Quality of urban transport was good with Ikorodu garage 35.3% as the highest in rating. The transport infrastructure was liked more in Agric 32.5%. Respondents reported (83.5%) that there issues with transportation in the research areas. Low amount of buses (Agric 30.7%, Ikorodu garage 29.5%) and high amount of traffic (Ogolonto 33.3%, Agric and Bayeku 26.7% each) were the major issues experienced by respondents. Respondents wanted provisions of more buses (Ikorodu garage 30.1%, Agric 29.6%) and efficient management of transport infrastructure (Bayeku 47.4%, Agric 26.9%). Suggestions and recommendations was also made; government should set up units under strict supervisions that will be responsible for the maintenance of roads and waterways, also people should be encouraged to participate in maintenance of transport networks and infrastructures.
