ABSTRACT

This study examined the socio-cultural implication of family planning for educational development. The researcher sort to know the sociocultural effect of family planning on educational development in other to control population growth and the effect on educational development, since one of the dynamic nature of population is birth rate. Seven research questions were raised and sever hypotheses were generated to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population consisted all the 27 government secondary school in Etsako West, L.G.A. of Edo State with a total population of 7002, both teachers and students. The sample was made up of 300 selected students and teachers. The selected teachers and students were randomly taking from three clans, among the six clans in Etsako West using hat and draw method. Six government secondary schools were used from the 20 government secondary school within the three clans through stratified sample. The instrument used was a questionnaire, comprised of 57 items. The collect relevant data were analysed, tested at 0.05 level of significance using descriptive statistical techniques of mean, and standard deviation. One-tailed t-test inferential statistics was used to test the null-hypothesis. The result from the hypothesis were all rejected. And the analysis data from the questionnaire showed that the teachers and students had good knowledge on family planning practice among the people. The extent to which population can effect education in terms of school’s population was revealed, and the effect of family planning practice on educational development among the people was discovered, it was  discovered that family planning can be used to control population growth, it was also discovered that preference for large family’s size practice had effect on educational development ,that it leads to insufficient educational material poor care  education, poor health care and poverty. It was also discovered that population growth had effect on education development, it leads to insufficient classroom, inadequate desk and chairs. The finding also revealed some relationship between family planning and population. Based on these findings, it was recommended that people should adopt family planning method as a means of controlling birth rate. And for proper distribution of education materials, there should be combination of political education and political economic for effective economic measures for up coming population. It is also recommended to incorporate the study population growth and family planning into religious courses and to encourage religious leaders to promote population control for better health reasons through religious ceremonies and religious talks.
