ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the socio-demographic factors that affects the usage of complete dentures. Materials and Methods: The various records of patients who visited the prosthodontic clinic of the University of Benin teaching hospital on account of complete dentures prosthesis made were retrieved and data such as the age, sex, educational status, socioeconomic status, arch affected, reason for tooth loss and demand of complete dentures were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version (SPSS),IBM version Results: 28 patients participated in this study with a mean age(SD) of 74.04(9.236)±, above half 57.5% were females, and according to the various socioeconomic levels used, it showed more skilled workers accounting for 42.9%. Dental caries (57.1%) was major reason for tooth loss and masticatory inefficiency (100%), the major reason for demand, with other reasons being aesthetics and speech. The maxillary arch was mostly affected (42.9%). Conclusion: There was an increase in demand of complete dentures with increasing age. Dental caries and periodontal diseases were the major causes of tooth loss among the patients. KEY WORD: Complete dentures, Socio-demographic factors, demand
