Summary
This study focused on discovering the significance of praise poem(Oriki) in the Yoruba culture and society. The first chapter outlined the purpose of the study and the limitation of the study to the Yoruba community. The proposed methods of data collection and analysis were also described. The data used were collected from Interviews and books and they are practices that are although modernized but are still very much among the Yoruba people. Five praise poems were collected in the Yoruba language and translated into English language. Functionalist Theory, a theory under Sociological theory served as the framework for research work . Literature related to the theoretical and sociological background of the study were also reviewed, after which the need for the study was justified.
Chapter Two focused on praise poems for monarchs (Kings and Chiefs) and their socio-cultural importance among the Yoruba people, while chapter Three focused on Deities and their praise poems. In Chapter four, emphasis was laid on praise poems for heroes such as warriors and hunters in Yoruba land. Common panegyric names were also looked at. At concluding each chapter, the relevance of these praise poems to the Yoruba community were identified and explained. The various praise poems used among the Yoruba people are significations of human relations.
