ABSTRACT

The study examined the social perception of abortion among undergraduate students of the University of Benin. The objective of the study was to find out the social perception of abortion among undergraduate students in the University of Benin; find out if students’ knowledge and attitudes on abortion depend on the different background factors such as age, religion, sex and area of upbringing and to know if undergraduates’ students supports that abortion should be legalized in Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted for this study. 400 copies of questionnaire were distributed to undergraduate students in the University of Benin. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0. The empirical result showed that the respondents agreed that abortion is considered a problem facing young girls today; that abortion is considered as murder and dangerous and that abortion among unmarried have been on the rise in Nigeria. The study recommend that there is need to address the issue of unintended pregnancy in adolescents and youth, focusing on providing information about contraception and how to negotiate safe sex; and that reproductive health (sex and family life) education should be introduced at secondary and tertiary institutions in the country, for the students to be properly informed on issues such as abortion and other related areas in human sexuality.
