ABSTRACT
Costume in Africa embodies a diverse array of cultures, traditions, and histories from colourful textiles to elaborate beadworks. These conveys not only cultural significance but also social status, religious beliefs, and ceremonies of diverse kinds which includes festivals. Festivals serves as communal gatherings of people where cultural elements are promoted in different ways. This research aim to understand the various chieftaincy institution of the Obior people and their Costume significance in the Ogbanigbe traditional festival of the of Obior people of Delta State. Alot of the cultural practices of this festival has gone into extinction because of lack of information on the festival. This study reveals the meaning embedded in the clothes used by the Onotu chiefs in the Ogbanigbe traditional festival through physical Observation and Oral interview, .The study reveals that costume reveals chief costume in the Ogbanigbe Festival as element of cultural identity and social recognition as well ritual celebration in the festival. Based on the findings, it is recommended by this researcher, that there should be recorded or written documents concerning the festival as the elders have little or no information to pass on to the younger generation. Thus, proper documentations of the various aspects of the festival will help to sustain and preserve the people’s culture.
