ABSTRACT

Over the years, Nigerians of different ethnic background have co-existed harmoniously. However, things began to change gradually in the buildup of the 1966 coup. Since then, there seems to have been no peace. Religious and ethnic sentiments together with Boko Haram insurgency now dominate the country’s daily activities. Some individuals are of the view that the nation be divided into at least three nations. Could it then be concluded that these groups in Nigeria cannot co-exist? Is it possible for Nigeria to exist as an entity? What role can Religion play to ensure peaceful co-existence? The research adopted a phenomenological research approach. The research revealed that the three main religions in the country all preach peace and oneness as it offers a deep sense of understanding, reconciliation and human fellowship. this research deals with the  Boko Haram sect as a social phenomenon. Boko Haram, was once a social communal movement but gradually evolved into a full-blown destructive hydra-headed insurgency operating in some states of the north-east of Nigeria. These insurgencies occasioned by deep-rooted corruption, poverty and institutional decay resulted in the erosion of norms and cultural value system as some states were thrown into an anomie condition. The study disclosed that the root cause of the Boko Haram phenomenon is the inherently self-sustaining nature of its driving force stemming from ignorance, poverty and illiteracy. The study concludes that religion is an indispensable tool in peacebuilding in Nigeria since it came with social reforms. Findings of the study revealed that religious traditions and communities served individuals and communities in promoting the goals of sustainable peace and human security by providing the necessary tools and resources that are needed in rebuilding broken relationships and enhancing collaborations. Implications of the study point to the imperatives for governments, regional and international regimes, policymakers, local institutions, and all stakeholders integrate religious leaders and communities in drafting and implementing policies to achieve social cohesion and human security.
