ABSTRACT

The study attempted a historical examination of the role women played in the political and socio-economic development of Delta State. The study examined the role from 1999 to 2019. The study showed the geography and people of Delta state, identified some of the people that made up Delta state. The study further highlighted the role of women in the Delta state before 1999, the political and socio-economic role of women in Delta State, since 1999 to 2019. The study highlighted the importance of women in societal development, highlighting their active participation in various aspects of growth through formal and informal production. In pre-colonial times, women were integral to society and contributed significantly to the development of their ethnic groups. However, in African history reconstruction, African women have been relegated to the background, often overlooked. Women like Omu Mgbushie, Maria Ejima Chizea, Onaibo, Obi Odogwu, Obi Ayologu, and Maryam Okogwu have played significant roles in reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of societies in Delta State, highlighting their significant contributions to socio-political culture and development.
