This study has examined the role United Nations World Tourism Organization, a global leading international organization responsible for promoting the development of tourism in many countries of the world including Nigeria.The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) being a United Nations specialized agency since 2003 has played immensurable role in the development of tourism in Nigeria. It has served as a global forum for tourism policy issues and a practical source of tourism know-how and aims to stimulate economic growth of its 154 member countries including Nigeria. UNWTO provides leadership and support to the tourism sector in the advancement of sustainable policies.
This research has examined the evolution of tourism in Nigeria and the historical perspective of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and its contribution to the development of tourism in Nigeria. The relative success made by United Nations World Tourism Organization in revamping the tourism industry in Nigeria is derived from Nigeria being a veritable tourist destination.
