ABSTRACT

The Nigerian Civil war was also known as Biafran War1 and today, it forms an important political aspect of the history of Nigeria. In Gowon’s first broadcast as a Head of State, he examined the question of the basis of Nigerian unity. Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu, an Oxford-trained military leader, then Governor of Eastern Nigeria, had little respect for Gowon and, like many other Igbo, he did not forgive the administration of Gowon for having allowed the murder of many Igbo military officers following the counter-coup. Nigeria became divided with Gowon controlling the North, West, Mid-West and Lagos and Ojukwu in effective control of the East. When all Igbo were requested to return home to the East and all Nigerians who were not of Eastern origin were expelled from the region, it was becoming clear that the East planned to break away formally from the federation (Nigeria).
