ABSTRACT
The history of Nigeria has been characterized by a variety of violence and this have greatly affected the sociopolitical development in Nigeria. This could be attributed to the coercive imposition and tradition in 1914 brought together by colonial era. Scholars have identified leadership problem, ethnic crisis, political crisis, religious crisis, cultism, civil disobedience, armed robbery as well as poor living standard of the people as the cause of violence and social economic development in Nigeria. This study titled “violence which deters socio political development in Nigeria, using Benin City as a case study (2015-2020)”explored the causes of violence in Nigeria and particularly in Benin City. The study revealed that poverty and unemployment, access to weapons through illegal means or small arms proliferation; poor governance and corruption, ineffective security operations and the culture of impunity causes of violence in the Nigeria and in Benin City. This study adopted a qualitative research method with survey instruments deployed to gather relevant data for analysis. Based on findings, it was recommended that the culture of impunity that encourages violence should be discouraged by sincere enforcement of laws prohibiting violence and illegal arms trade, possession and use, it was also recommended that Government of Edo State should initiate good people oriented that would help in reducing the high level of poverty and unemployment in the State and Nigeria at large.
