ABSTRACT
The research study focused on the role of strategic planning in fostering growth in small businesses around Benin City in Edo state Nigeria. The need for the knowledge of the impact of strategic planning on small businesses becomes imperatives due to the inconsistency and mass failure that the business do encounter. The intense scrutiny on small businesses has been against the backdrop of the low performance and inefficiency that characterized its operations, particularly in performing its role on economic growth and development. Despite government institutional and policy that has been geared towards strengthening the capacity of small business enterprises, some players in the small scale business enterprises category have fallen short of expectations and this has generated serious concern and sceptism on whether it can bring about economic growth and national developments in Nigeria has its does in other countries of the world. The study population size was 1,240,965,while the sample size generated was 100. Questionnaire was use as the means of data collection which was distributed electronically to various small business operators within Ugbowo Benin City which makes the sample size of the study. The result generated from the information gathered through the questionnaire administered was analysed using descriptive statistics and Ordinary Least Square Regression. The result generated shows a significant impact of Strategic planning in fostering small business growth, It recommend that small business owners must adopt befitting strategic planning which can help their small business experience exponential growth and gives adequate profit while maintaining comparative advantage over their competitors.
