ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to examine how religion and ethnicity have contributed to nation building in Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to examine the positive and negative effects of religion and ethnicity in nation building; investigate the role of religion in nation building in Nigeria; examine the relevance of ethnicity in nation building in Nigeria; remind our religious and societal leaders to keep on making emphasis on the reasons to live together as one; and make recommendations on how religion and ethnicity has built the nation Nigeria. The study relied on secondary sources, distilling facts about religious and ethnic conflicts and their contribution to nation building. It also relied on unstructured oral interview with some Christian religious leaders. The interviews were recorded, transcribed into text and analysed. These data were finally synthesised yielding an explanatory framework for determining the role of religion and ethnicity in nation building in Nigeria. The findings from the study are,  religion and ethnicity have positive and negative impact on the people; religion and ethnicity crisis have a negative impact on individuals and society at large; the negative impact of religion and ethnicity in our society can be reduced through effective leadership;  the role of religious and community leaders in moulding the behaviour of individuals in the society should be emphasised and revived; the recommendations will help in proffering solutions to religio-ethnic crisis in the society it is adhered  to.
