ABSTRACT

This study examined the role of Parents Teachers Association in the administration of secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The aim of this study was to assess the role of P.T.A in the administration of secondary schools in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State.

The descriptive survey research design method was employed for the study; The population for this study comprised 613 teachers, 3734 parents from 29 private secondary schools in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for the study was 434 respondents selected using the simple random sampling technique; all questionnaires were answered and returned. Data collected was analyzed using frequency counts, percentage and mean.

The findings from the research questions include: PTA helps in checking the activities of teachers and other staff through provision of advisory services, provision of some part of the funds for the running of the school, to proffer solutions on better ways of administration and supports parents, teachers and students to ensure that all children are treated in accordance with the ethos of the school. PTA helps in the provision of infrastructural and other basic school requirement, assist in the construction of schools, provide electricity and pipe-borne water, helps in equipping of science laboratories and participate in the formation of school policies. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made; the principals and parents should be at unison on the extent of their financial contributions in school,government should provide funds to assist in the running of private secondary schools.
