ABSTRACT

The study examined The Role of Literature in the Teaching and learning of English language. A case  study of the University of Benin Secondary school in Ovia North East Local Government. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. Several relevant literature were reviewed in the course of the study.

The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was drawn from all  secondary school students of University Demonstration Secondary school  (UDSS)in ovia North East local Government area, and a  sample size of fifty (50 )Secondary  students were used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was the research questionnaire and obtained data were analysed used mean (average) and percentage.

Based on the above findings, the researcher concludes and recommended thus: Teachers should incorporate the teaching of the literature text in the classroom.

The use of Literary text in University Demonstration Secondary School should be highly encouraged. Curriculum Planners should take note of the impact of literature in respect to creative writing while planning the curriculum. There should be a language lab/ library where students can go to read books which will inspire their creative abilities and also help them increase their vocabularies.
