ABSTRACT

The internal crisis that engulfed Sudan puts her in a bad chaotic situation of becoming a failed state and it created a lot of humanitarian crisis which lead to the displacement of many citizens within and outside the country thus resulting to refugee problem. For the purpose of this research work, secondary data shall be used to analyse the causes and consequences of the crisis in Sudan and the response of the regional body and international community in resolving the conflict. Research findings indicates that the conflict started immediately after the Independence of Sudan in 1956 but segregation and religious beliefs between Moslems and other sect in the country by Al Bashir’s government further escalated the crisis when he refused to allow Southern Sudanese people to participate in government affairs and deliberately frustrated all efforts by the international mediators to resolve the conflict plunged Sudan into a civil war. Moreover, the lack of a standby army and financial consideration limited the African Union from responding swiftly which further aggravated the situation. Meanwhile, efforts by UN, EU and ICC through resolutions declaring Al Bashir wanted for genocide and other crimes against humanity did not stop the crisis in Sudan from degenerating until South Sudan finally succeeded from Sudan. It only a standby force and good financial strength that can empower African Union and its quick response mechanism to easily foresaw future occurrences of war in the continent as we saw in the case of Sudan.
