ABSTRACT

Family involvement in elderly care is essential, given the increasing frailty and health needs of older individuals. The role of family caregivers, often unpaid relatives, is crucial in providing practical aid and emotional support to elderly relatives. However, caregiving comes with various challenges influenced by socioeconomic, cultural, and familial factors. This study aims to investigate family caregiving for elderly relatives in Egor Local Government, Nigeria. Understanding family caregiving dynamics can aid in identifying challenges, developing interventions, and promoting culturally sensitive practices. Additionally, it informs policymakers and healthcare providers to support family caregivers effectively, ultimately enhancing the quality of care for elderly individuals. A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was employed. Ten family caregivers from Egor LGA participated, providing insights into their experiences, challenges, and suggestions for improvement. Data analysis followed an inductive approach, aiming for rich insights into caregiving dynamics. Caregivers reported physical strain, time constraints, financial burdens, and fear of responsibility as significant challenges. Positive impacts included feelings of purpose and closeness with care recipients. However, caregivers expressed a lack of support from the government and suggested training programs, respite care services, financial assistance, and elder abuse prevention measures. The study's findings align with existing literature, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of caregiving and its impact on caregivers' well-being. Policy implications include comprehensive support programs and measures to allevipate caregivers' burdens and ensure elder individuals'
