ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to find out the role of Christian Religion Education in promoting a peaceful co-existence among students of University of Benin, Benin City. The descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. The instrument for the study was a questionnaire. Simple percentage method of data analysis was used in analyzing the data gotten from the respondents. Findings from the study revealed that wrong interpretation of the scripture by those who claim authority to the interpretations of the holy books in Nigeria is one of the causes of crises among students of diverse religious group in University of Benin. Findings also revealed that, incessant closure of schools is one of the effects of crises on educational activities in the University of Benin. It was also revealed that lecture method and presentation method are the approaches adopted by lecturers in teaching and learning Christian Religious Education that could promote a peaceful co-existence among students in the University of Benin. It was recommended that religion as a subject should be made compulsory for student at all levels of the educational system from primary to tertiary level. Clerics, Imams, and Traditionalist should uphold the tenets and teach moral values in their respective places of worship and promote peace in their communities.
