ABSTRACT
This research examines the crucial role played by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch in promoting and protecting human rights globally. Through their advocacy, research, and documentation efforts, these organizations have become key players in holding governments and non-state actors accountable for human rights violations. The study adopts the historical research method. Further information was sourced from both primary and secondary sources. The study explores Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch role, impact, and challenges in advancing human rights, including their work in conflict zones, advocacy for policy change, and support for human rights defenders. The research highlights the significance of these organizations in pushing for justice, dignity, and freedom, and their collaborative efforts with local communities, governments, and international organizations to create a more just and equitable world. By examining the role of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, this study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the human rights movement and its ongoing struggles and triumphs. The study recommendations that government should access existing policies and the legal framework for NGO involvement in the development process, government should ensure how NGO's can ensure accountability to their constituencies, which include the grassroots or community groups that they service and assist, NGO's need to consider ways to enhance their own abilities in other to make the greatest impact, international development organizations, particularly bilateral and multilateral agencies, need to involve NGO's in dialogue and policy discussions with government with regard to development cooperation and international NGO's, particularly in the North, need to advocate favorable policies towards countries in the south.
