ABSTRACT

This study investigates the role of adult education programmes on the development of small and medium scale enterprises in Benin Metropolis. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study 

A total of One Hundred and Fifty (150) participants selected from the Five (5) skill acquisition Centre in Benin metropolis where used for the study. This was selected through proportionate sampling techniques. In this wise, Fifty percent (50%) of the population was used as the study sample. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as Tables, frequencies counts, and percentages.

Findings of the study revealed that the available adult education programmes for the development of small and medium scale enterprises in Benin Metropolis are;  basic literacy education, functional literacy education, vocational education, environmental education and computer literacy education. It was further revealed that engaging actively in lifelong learning helps inculcate in business people. It was recommended that microfinance schemes should be instituted, strengthened, promoted and encouraged by the financial and non-bank financial institutions to support local people create small businesses for themselves and others. Repayment of credit advanced to operators of small businesses, should be guaranteed by the group members, not just the individuals. It was further recommended that government should adopt integrated multimedia communication approach to vigorously promote and build the enterprising mindset of community members toward small business initiatives in the communities. The over 500 radio stations, television stations, Information Service Cinema Vans and appropriate social media techniques should be used to sensitize, conscientise and educate community members on the need to be entrepreneurial in their thinking and action.
