Abstract:

This research project is titled "The Relevance of Folktales in the Teaching and Learning of Literature in Junior Secondary Schools Ovia North East Local Government Area Benin City. The main goal of this study is to ascertain the relevance of folktales in the Teaching and Learning of Literature in Junior Secondary Schools.

 

To achieve this goal, the review of related literature was done to provide a good basis for the conclusion of this work. Additionally, the survey research design was utilized and to ensure the attainment of the general aim, Four (4) research questions were raised and the questionnaire was tested,validated and adopted as the instrument for data collection. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using frequency and simple percentage on tables.

 

From the findings of this study, it was revealed that the relevance of Folktales in the Teaching and Learning of Literature in Junior secondary schools include the positive effects it has in the teaching and learning of literature (such as making it easier for students to understand literary concept, helps students enjoy literature more, motivates students to read more literature outside the classroom), folktales shaping the moral development of students, it contributes to a deeper understanding of cultural details and values among students, it helps students become more aware of their cultural traditions and history.

 

     Recommendations were provided for the study which included Teachers to be educated about the importance of incorporating folktales into literature instruction, Teachers to utilize teaching techniques that are appropriate for their students and enough to spark their interest, Well-trained teachers,particularly those  with enough knowledge in folktales should be recruited to teach literature in Junior Secondary Schools, Schools should ensure that their libraries offer a diverse selection of reading materials and Students should be encouraged to engage in activities related to folktales such as storytelling session, creative writings, folktales collection and so on during their literature classes.
