ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to examine the relevance of folktale in the teaching and learning of Literature in Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia South West. The specific objectives of the study were; To ascertain the view of students towards` using folktales in teaching literature in Senior Secondary Schools, the effects of folktales in teaching of literature In Senior Secondary Schools and the relationship between folktale and understanding literature in secondary school.
Two senior secondary classes were used for the study. A number of folk stories were chosen from Native Son stories, which contains some moral lessons. In scoring, student performance was computed out of allotting two points for each correct answer and (one) for each wrong answer for easy coding. The test was designed and administered by the researcher. Questionnaire was also distributed to students to answers questions relating to their views towards` using folktales in teaching literature. A descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency, and percentage was used, an independent-sample T test and correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship between folktale and understanding literature in secondary school. The result showed that students have positive view towards` using folktales in teaching literature in Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia South West. The result indicated that using folktales to teach literature to students in secondary schools has a positive impact on students’ performance. The result showed that there was a significant relationship between folktale and understanding literature in secondary school.
Based on the findings in this study, it is recommended that education curriculum should integrate the use of folktales into the existing literature curriculum in a systematic and cohesive manner.
