The study shed light on perceptions and attitudes regarding political education and its impact on students' involvement in school union activities at the University of Benin. There is a consistent recognition of the importance of political education, with an acknowledgment of room for improvement despite the generally positive outlook. Regarding the relationship between political education and school union involvement, there is a strong consensus that political education stimulates interest and participation in school union activities. Divergent opinions exist regarding the extent to which political education influences students' attitudes towards school union participation, suggesting the need for further exploration. Overall, these findings underscore the value of political education in fostering active citizenship and promoting participation in school union affairs, while also indicating areas for continued research and dialogue.
The study recommends that institutions prioritize the enhancement of political education by updating curricula to include diverse perspectives, current events, and interactive methods. By doing so, students can be actively engaged in the political process. Additionally, universities should promote student participation in school union activities through workshops, seminars, and leadership training programs, fostering a culture of engagement and developing valuable skills in leadership and advocacy. Furthermore, the study suggests creating platforms for open dialogue and debate on political issues to encourage critical thinking and respectful discourse among students. This can include organizing panel discussions, debates, and forums where students can express opinions, engage with diverse perspectives, and collaborate on solutions to societal challenges. By facilitating constructive dialogue, universities empower students to become informed and active participants in the democratic process.
