ABSTRACT

Humans naturally exhibit preference for paired body parts such as preference for one eye over the other. The effectiveness of a part that makes up a pair of bilateral organs could either be equal, better or worse than its other parts. This could result in a preference for using the more effective part, which is then referred to as the dominant component.  Various parameters are considered in determination of eye dominance including acuity dominance

Glaucoma is a damage to the optic nerve thereby causing a progressive and irreversible loss of vision. Ocular dominance may shift from the original position into the better eyes as the glaucoma progresses. If the dominant eye gets affected by glaucoma and suffers functional deterioration, the patient begins to experience difficulty in vision. Therefore, it is imperative to say that the patients with glaucoma may possibly shift their dominant eye to the eye that gives a better visual acuity. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between eye dominance and the better visual acuity in glaucoma patients. A total of 80 glaucoma subjects were selected for this study, both male and female between the ages of 29-85. The Hole-in-the-card test was used to determine the dominant eye. The results of the study clearly showed that in glaucomatous eyes, ocular dominance was more often positioned in the right eye and the eye with better visual acuity. The participants tended to prefer the eye with the better visual acuity.
