ABSTRACT
A study was undertaken in which two breeds of rabbits (New Zealand & Dutch) were fed two levels of diets with the objectives of assessing and comparing their performances. Six (6)weaner rabbits (3 Dutch x 3 New Zealand), at six weeks of age were used for the experiment.
The rabbits were subjected to two diets containing concentrate and forage respectively, using a completely randomized design. Feed and water were supplied ad libitum. Performance indices evaluated were body weight gain, feed intake and the effects of breeds on age were determined. Data collected were subjected to analysis variance, the result show significant (p<0.05) on weight gain in relation to age except feed intake shows non-significant. In this study New Zealand breed show superior to Dutch breed and is therefore recommended that New Zealand rabbit be adopted for breeding purpose in Nigeria, due to its ability to attained maturity faster than Dutch.
