ABSTRACT

This prospective observational study examines the relationship between ocular perfusion pressure and refractive state in young population. A total of eighty (n=80) subjects within the age range of 15 to 30 years with mean age of 22.39 ± 4.93 years made up of 21 cases of myopes, 13 cases of hyperopes, 19 cases of astigmatism and 27 cases of emmetropes were used for this study. Each of the participant’s intraocular pressure (IOP), systemic blood pressure and refractive status was checked and recorded. The difference is mean IOP across the refractive state was statistically significant. Regression analysis performed on the MOPP and SPP showed a significantly positive linear correlation. Similarly, regression analysis performed on MOPP and DPP showed a significant positive linear correlation. However, the association between MOPP and MAP was not statistically significant. The regression analysis performed on IOP and MOPP showed a statistically significant inverse correlation. The difference in mean MOPP between Myopes and Hyperopes was statistically significant. Similarly, the difference in mean MOPP between Astigmatism and Emmetropes was statistically significant. The inverse relationship between IOP and OPP has always shown indication towards having a lower value of MOPP as indicative of standing a chance of having primary open angle glaucoma since the normal value for MOPP is (47.70mmHg) for Nigerians, therefore any value lower than (47.70mmHg) is a risk factor for primary open angle glaucoma.
