ABSTRACT

Climate Change poses a profound global challenge, and its impact on Nigeria is both imminent and far-reaching. The urgency of addressing climate change is paramount, and Nigeria’s commitment to this global challenge is showcased through diverse array of legal instruments and frameworks. This study provides comprehensive analysis of Nigeria’s climate change legal regimes, with a focus on key components such as the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency Act (NESREA), National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency Act (NOSREA), Environmental Impact Assessment Act (EIA), the Paris Agreement, the Kyoto Protocol, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the recently enacted Climate Change Act of 2021. The study dissects the specific roles and impacts of these legal frameworks, evaluating their effectiveness in mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable practices within the nation. Analysis of the Climate Change Act of 2021 underscores its significance in the context of Nigerian Climate legislation. Additionally, the research explores the alignment of these legal regimes with international climate agreements, emphasizing Nigeria’s role in contributing to global climate efforts. The research findings not only shed light on the multifaceted approach to climate action in Nigeria but also highlight areas that require further attention and refinements.
